In college I pictured the great engineer as a mercenary — a lone wolf solving impossible problems, materializing for the heroic moment, vanishing afterward. The senior engineers I learned from at Meta were the opposite. Not Guan Yu or Zhang Fei (the heroic warriors of 삼국지). Zhuge Liang. The real definition of a "10x engineer" wasn't 10x personal output. It was multiplying the output of everyone in earshot — setting priorities, seeing the road ahead, growing other engineers. The leverage isn't in being the strongest soldier. It's in being the one who makes the army stronger.
